Our Story

Mulberry tree in Spitalfields, outside the famous Hawksmoor Church. We discovered it while doing a school run in the small green space.

We build. We grow. We nurture.

When we co-founded Sow Green, we actively wanted to build the participation, voice and power of local racialised communities in environmental and climate change projects.

We would like to work with young people, families and children living on the council estates in between the roads where the air pollution is dangerously unhealthy.

Reset. Action. Act Now

Our simple vision is for communities to organise to take action on climate change.

We work directly with community organisations or projects located in communities.

We believe this is the faster route to change. There is some urgency to our shared environmental challenge.

We are a network of people of colour who have a deep interest in using our backgrounds in community development to connect to climate work and protect our heritage. We are community builders.

There are so many ways to do this. We will try and explain the way we work without using complicated frameworks like a theory of change which might not easily be understood by the communities we work in.

Sometimes we can bring about change by working to bring about small changes in people’s behaviours and habits – the small ripple effects.

At other times, we would like to work with individuals who are motivated to bring about deeper changes, and they may have arrived at this understanding by seeing the value of their collective voice, capacity and power through community organising.

We seek to build better understanding of our own place in a wider system of inequalities that also perpetuate ‘what happens to us’.

We see racial inequality and climate emergency as part of the same parcel of injustice; one cannot be addressed without the other.

This work is in deep and slow-burning which means it won’t be ‘fixed’ overnight, but we do work with our own communities through projects that have value and meaning in their lives right now as a necessity.

People should not have to make a choice between protecting our planet or looking after their families and making time for both.

We hope you can support us in our journey now while we are growing and creating spaces for own communities to lead their own projects and find solutions.
